If you dream of spending your days on gorgeous beaches, paddling kayaks to and fro, and enjoying languorous dinners with your feet in the sand, there's no finer laid-back-luxury resort on St. John. Rooms look as if they're right out of a magazine: if you opt for one of the beachfront accommodations, you can get out of bed and stumble a few steps across the sand to the Caribbean; otherwise, you can look out on the gardens or the tennis courts. Rooms have air-conditioning or can be opened to catch the breezes, but don't come with TVs, or even a phone—all the better to get away from it all. Nightlife runs to steel-pan music or an easy-listening combo—so if you want lots of action, go elsewhere.
