Fodor's Expert Review Saba Ecolodge
Crispeen Track, Windwardside, n/a Saba, Saba
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
If you like hiking and getting back to nature, then this lodge, a five-minute walk deep in the rain forest, is for you. It is primarily solar powered, which means mostly sun showers, no TVs, no in-room plugs for your phone (you can charge it in the restaurant), and candlelight after dark. Five of the 12 cottages have hot tubs, but they're very basic (their charm comes from ornate nature-themed wall paintings and starry ceilings done by local artist Heleen Cornet). The bathroom showers, some heated by propane, have a spout coming out of the ceiling. Interspersed among the cottages are herb and vegetable gardens, whose produce is used in the Rainforest Restaurant. Breakfast is available for an additional charge.
PROS
- almost like camping
- candlelit restaurant
- nature-themed cottages
CONS
- it's a hike to get here and a rocky, steep climb to rooms
- only three cottages have ocean views
- no electricity or Internet
