You must pay a tax on your hotel room rate: 11% for hotels with casinos, 9% for other hotels, and 7% for government-approved paradores. Ask your hotel before booking. The tax, in addition to each hotel's discretionary service charge (5%–16%), can add a hefty 12%–27% to your bill. The island's sales tax is 11.5% (the highest in the U.S.).
