Methven

Methven's main claim to fame is as a ski town. It's a one-hour drive from Christchurch and the closest town to Mt. Hutt, which has New Zealand's longest ski season from June to October. You can't stay on the mountain, so Methven is après-ski central. It's also a great base to stay if you are skiing at the five boutique club fields within the region. The small boutique ski club fields are also open to the public–-the accommodation is members-only during peak season but you can stay in Methven and go to these club fields for the day. They have basic facilities and are suited to more experienced skiers. Tow prices are cheaper if you are a member. An hour away is Canterbury's other major ski area, Porters. Some of New Zealand's best heli-skiing is available from Methven, too. In late September the famous Peak to Pub race challenges competitors to skiing, biking, and running across snow, dirt, and pavement from the top of the mountain to the famous Blue Pub. If you are here in summer, you will get a feel for the area's strong mountain bike culture. There's a range of established mountain bike trails and many more in the works, while uncrowded country roads provide great flat riding for road cyclists. You can also enjoy horse riding, hiking, salmon fishing, jet-boating, tandem skydiving, and hot-air ballooning.
