Huahine Restaurants

Hotels and most pensions have restaurants and can offer half-board (MAP) options, while some small establishments include breakfast and airport transfers. Most of the island's independent restaurants are in Fare. You'll find similar menus at most restaurants and these usually include poisson cru, shrimp, and grilled fish, meat, and lobster—most accompanied with vanilla sauce—as well as desserts like coconut tart with vanilla ice cream. Independent restaurants tend to be cheaper and serve bigger portions. There are a couple of roulottes at the wharf in Fare, which sell chow mein, lemon chicken, stir-fries, rice, and pizza. Prices are around 1,100 CFP a dish and portions are big. Tipping is not expected, but will of course be accepted.

  • 1. Ari'I Restaurant

    $$$$ | Asian

    Executive chef Jean Frederic Markacz has a simple philosophy when creating dishes: use only the freshest local fruit and vegetables combined with fish straight out of the ocean. He incorporates the much-loved vanilla bean with mahimahi and also uses it to create a sauce to accompany a chicken breast stuffed with papaya. Swordfish, red tuna, and lobster are always on the menu. The restaurant has a wonderful position over the water with both lagoon and ocean views.

  • 3. Les Dauphins

    $$ | Fare | French

    You can't miss Les Dauphins (The Dolphins), as it's right next to the post office in Fare—the only post office on the island. There are seven tables beautifully set for dinner each night under thatched cover and casual lunch dining in the garden under bright umbrellas. The menu is quite imaginative for Huahine and includes stuffed mussels with garlic butter, sautéed jumbo prawns with cognac, and fillet of duck with honey sauce. There's also confit of duck with potatoes and garlic and, for those with plain tastes, grilled lamp chops. Finish off with the classic French dessert of crème brûlée, or a warm coconut tart with vanilla ice cream. You can order half or full bottles of wine.

  • 5. Pension Mauarii

    $$ | Parea | Seafood

    The restaurant at this popular pension prides itself on using local products in 95% of its dishes. You'll find Tahitian dishes such as Fa Fa chicken (chicken with taro leaves and coconut milk) and Punu Pualoro (smoked beef with coconut cream) on the menu. Lobster and crab, and a medley of both, are house specialties and are huge dishes. If you're brave you can also try mako shark but that might be too much of an ironic twist after a day on the lagoon feeding sharks and rays. Desserts include baked papaya with coconut cream and coconut tart.

  • 6. Rauheama Snack Restaurant

    $ | Seafood

    This pleasant little thatched hut, with a coral floor and pareos hanging from the ceiling, does a brisk trade when cruise ships are in port. It's directly opposite the dock where passengers are ferried ashore, right on beautiful Maroe Bay. It has a very limited menu with the friendly French-speaking Tahitian owner offering baguettes with various fillings such as chicken and salad for those who want a snack and the heartier plat du jour (dish of the day)—which is whatever she's just cooked. It may be a platter of fish and vegetables featuring poisson cru, grilled fish, beans, and salad—with a sizeable portion of fries. The food's good and you can also buy a pareo.
