Fodor's Expert Review Daibutsu Korokoro

$$$$ Nagoya Japanese

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

This traditional restaurant has several twists, the main one being the decor. Modern Japanese restaurants should all look like this—dark wood, discreet lighting, and a maze of private dining rooms. A 9½-foot-tall bronze Buddha sits in the center. If anything, the fancy trappings slightly overshadow the food and drink, which includes decent sashimi sets and some inventive tofu dishes, as well as a small but good selection of shochu and sake. To make ordering easier, and if you're feeling hungry, consider the ¥4,300 Daibutsu Kaiseki course, which comes with nine dishes (including sashimi and tempura) as well as 90 minutes of all-you-can-drink alcohol (beer, sake, cocktails) and soft drinks.
