Fodor's Expert Review Former residence of Hosokawa Gyobu

Kumamoto Historic Home

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

This private home was built in 1646 for the Hosokawa family, who took power at the behest of Tokugawa in 1611—and whose local lineage produced Japan's former Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa (served 1993–94). It's an excellent example of traditional shoin-zukuri construction.
