Safety

Like other Moroccan cities, Marrakesh is quite safe. While women—particularly those traveling alone or in pairs—are likely to suffer from catcalls and whistles, there is generally little physical risk. The city does have its fair share of pickpockets, especially in markets and other crowded areas; handbags should be zippered and held closely, and wallets placed in inside pockets. The old city shuts down relatively early, so don't wander its dark alleys late at night. The Moroccan Tourist Police take their jobs very seriously, so don't hesitate to call on them. They operate undercover so are hard to identify, but in the medina they are never far away; ask any guide or shopkeeper to alert them if you're in trouble. Their office is on the northern side of the place Djemâa el Fna. Additional armed foot patrols are visible and vigilant at key locations in the city and throughout the popular tourist areas.
