  • 1. Bleu

This is Alexandria's coolest venue. You can enjoy the shisha along with your cocktail. With a contemporary decor and a marble-floored terrace overlooking the north coast beaches and Corniche (open May through November only), the bar offers a venue for the trendy in-crowd.

  • 2. Cap d'Or

    Manshiya

A modest place, Cap d'Or is blessed with a gorgeous old art nouveau bar that serves a range of Stellas (the primary Egyptian beer brand) along with some cognacs. Drinks will arrive with snacks that may be charged for—ask before you start nibbling. The bar is on the small street that runs south from Sa'd Zaghlul; it is usually open until 2 am.

  • 3. Elite

    Mahatet El Raml

This Raml Station café and restaurant popular among expats is a good place to find out about local performances and other cultural events.

  • 4. Monty Bar

The Cecil's bar was named after General Montgomery, who commanded the Allied troops in the Battle of El Alamein. Monty Bar is a suitably conservative, wood-paneled venue. The clientele is a mixture of expat workers and sophisticated Cairenes. There's regular live music, but Monty's is too small to take the volume levels, so conversation can become impossible.

  • 5. Sky Roof—Windsor Palace Hotel

Located on the roof of the Windsor Palace Hotel, the appropriately named Sky Roof is a relaxed bar, lounge, and restaurant where local and exclusively selected international DJs start spinning around 9 pm. You can hear the music from the outdoor lounge, which is made up of comfortable, cushy sofas and tables but if the wind picks up at night (and it often does), head inside to continue the party. Supposedly reservations are required and staff must first approve your social media profile before a reservation is granted but we did not find this to be the case.

  • 6. Sky View

Equal parts restaurant, bar, and lounge, Sky View comes alive on top of the Paradise Inn-Metropole Hotel each night with live entertainment. Enjoy dinner or drinks and watch the sun set over the Mediterranean Sea or grab a seat at one of the inviting couches on the patio. Note that the space can get extremely windy at night and there is sometimes an order minimum (LE100–LE200) that isn't posted at the entrance. Supposedly reservations are required and staff must first approve your social media profile before a reservation is granted but we did not find this to be the case.

  • 7. Spitfire Bar

This is a real sailor's bar: banknotes and bumper stickers from all over the world cover the walls, and among the other decorations are a yellowing advertisement for the marines—a fairly tame poster of a woman in a wet T-shirt. But the atmosphere couldn't be more congenial—it's almost sedate—and there isn't a hint of sleaze to be found. The Spitfire is just north of Shar'a Sa'd Zaghlul on Shar'a Ancienne Bourse and is open until midnight.
