transport Houston - Galveston

My wife & I are booked on a week's cruise from Galveston in October. But we hadn't realised the challenges of getting there. Some of our family are also on the cruise, but travelling separately. They may rent a holiday home in Galveston for a few days before the cruise. We may join them. I'm trying to find out if there is any regular public transport from Bush Airport to the cruise terminal. Or can we hire a car at the airport and drop it near the cruise port. I'm more familiar with cities in Europe where there are reasonably priced trains and buses, but I can't find any for this trip; it seems like everyone drives there. Also, if we stay in Galveston a few days, are there buses to get us to the cruise port? Or is it easy to get a taxi?
As always, any suggestions appreciated.

You weren't specific which airport in Houston you'll be arriving at - George Bush International Airport (IAH) or Houston Hobby Airport (HOU)

I believe Enterprise has a car rental location at or very near the cruise port in Galveston so it is possible to rent a car from them at either of those airports and turn it in at the cruise port. You can find some helpful information here:
https://www.cruzely.com/renting-a-ca...n-cruise-port/

Travelocity's website (https://www.travelocity.com/Car-Rent...r-Rental-Guide) also shows that Thrifty, Alamo, Payless and Dollar Car rentals have cars you can rent at IAH (not sure about at HOU) but since this info contradicts what is said in the "cruzely" article (link above) you should check directly with the individual car rental companies to confirm.

Also, there are a number of companies that offer shuttles or car service transportation between IAH and HOU to the cruise terminal in Galveston. Here are a few links but if you do a simple internet search for "getting from IAH to Galveston Cruise Terminal" you'll find more links:

https://www.cruzely.com/how-to-get-f...n-cruise-port/

https://www.locallimosingalveston.com

I doubt using public bus service to get from your family's rental home to the cruise port would be a viable option so a taxi or car service will be your best option.

Actually, OP says it is Bush (IAH) airport
Public transport in Houston is generally abysmal, even with the much touted light rail. From IAH to Galveston your best option is usually shared shuttles at about $35 pp or private shuttle for ten times that fare (yes, $350). Uber or Lyft are about the same to slightly more expensive but metered taxi fares are usurious and to be avoided. Only Enterprise has a location on Galveston island, but one way rentals from IAH are not always (read: seldom) available. Good source for info on options here but check to verify the info is still up to date.

Thanks so much for taking the time to assist. After I posted I also found these: www.galvestonlimo.com/airport-shuttle.asp which is linked to https://thegalvestonshuttle.com - possibly same as or similar to one given above by RoamsAround. Much obliged.
