The best hotels in Caen are the 5* Hotel Ivan Vautier (with a 1* Michelin restaurant)

ivanvautier.com

or the 4* BW Le Dauphin in a priory
http://www.bestwestern.fr/fr/hotel-C...-Dauphin,93434

or the 4* mercure, probably.

For visiting tne D-Day beaches and Mt. St-Michel, it would be better to stay in Bayeux instead of Caen.

By best - are you asking for the most luxurious (and probably most expensive) hotel? Or are you asking for some combination or price/value (moderate, modest or budget)?

And agree that Bayeux is more convenient for what you want to see - as well as perfect for viewing the world famous tapestry retelling the story of the norman invasion of england.

Happy has it right - Bayeux is a much more nicer place to stay and closer to the main D-Day sites - one of the few towns not blitzed in WW2 it retains an old-world charm totally lacking in Caen, which was leveled and nicely rebuilt but rather modern and a largish city.

Most people would prefer Bayeux a lot more than Caen.

Are you driving or taking the train?

Caen, as a much bigger centre, has more choices of accommodation and restaurants than Bayeux, plus its own devastating experience of the Normandy battles. The fortress castle of William the Conqueror sit in its centre. It's an easy commute to Bayeux for a tour, but the peace museum in Caen, well regarded, also organizes tours of the invasion beaches.

I walked around Caen for half a day and found it a pleasant if modern city - large city with unusual trams that can also convert to buses when they reach the end of the tram line. It's a nice city but most folks I think will like the more old-worldish and smaller town of Bayeux but Caen is fine too - do visit Bayeux though for its 1066 Queen Matildha's Tapestry and sublime cathedral.

The Caen Peace Memorial museum is tops - the first stop would be nice there because there is a large relieft map of the whole Jour-J area.

I am still confused by the the OP's use of best then tried to explain by using good.
Both are undefinable.

I agree Bayeux is certainly a very good location to explore the beaches from.Plus for it's many historical links.

who knows, without explanation, the only conclusion I could reach that this means the top-rated hotels, that's all. If it was to meant best on a budget at some level, etc., best to be close to the train trains, whatever, the OP should have said. Best in terms of star ratings isn't undefinable, as Caen isn't that big so there are only a few at the top level of official ratings.
