Best neighborhood for Rome?
My wife and I are thinking of renting a flat in Rome for 7-10 days next May. What neighborhoods should we be looking at? We want safety, access to public transportation, good restuarants we could walk to, and nearby shopping for food and nice stores for browsing.

Any central neighbourhood will satisfy all those criteria.
I have visited Rome at least a dozen times and rented at least six times.
Three quarters of respondents will swear by Piazza Navona (or nearby Campo dei Fiori).
Most of the others will choose the Spanish Steps area, for its superior shopping.
Trastevere is a minority favourite, because it is cheaper, has good restaurants and is a good place for the young.
Those are the top picks, in a nutshell.
It actually is as simple as that.
(After trying them all, I woud choose P. Navona.)

I agree with what tedgale said - though our favorite area is the Pantheon and that wasn't mentioned. Have also stayed in Trastevere but wouldn't recommend for first visit as not as centrally located. Don't worry too much about access to public transportation - its not that helpful in Rome. If you are centrally located you should be able to walk almost everywhere with an occasional taxi ride if need be.

Any hotel recommendations for near the Pantheon and P. Navona? We'd love a great rooftop and if it isn't too much to ask, adjoining rooms - but not absolutely necessary. My husband and I are taking our kids (13, 11 and 7) from Dec 29-Jan 4. Any and all ideas welcome! Thanks

We have stayed twice at Albergo Cesari near the Pantheon with our kids in their quad room, which would be too small for the 5 of you. I don't think they have adjoining rooms but I'm sure you could request rooms next to each other. They have a very nice rooftop. They did a remodel a few years ago and I know the price has gone up since our last stay, so may be on the more expensive side, but excellent location and great service.
