Akrotiri Tours
Are there any small group tours available for the Akrotiri site on Santorini? So far I have only found the group tour for 25 euro which would be great, but it is only available at noon. That doesn't work for our schedule. The other option I have found is the private tour. The private tour is a bit overkill expense wise. We would like to see the site, but if we dont have some sort of guide I don't think we will get much out of it.
Thanks

Guides are available on site. We went around 3pm & several were clustered by the ticket office for hire on the spot. But . . . Akrotiri is both a confusing & a pretty basic site. On first glance it is just rubble ascending a hill under a roof. A raised walkway around the exterior protects the ruins from grubby tourist's feet & there is only one small area (the triangular square between the West House & the Delta Complex - if you do the research) where you can descend to ground level. You can't go into any houses. You don't see any frescoes in situ. A good site map & some Google research should tell you the basic facts when combined with the minimal signage - in Greek & English. To really prepare, you should visit the Archaeological Museum in Athens & the Museum of Ancient Thera in Fira before you go to Akrotiri.
And even then, at the end, I am sure that most tourists - with or without a guide - walk away thinking that it's just rubble ascending a hill under a roof . . .
