10-Hr Auto Tour o Lisbon,Portugal

A couple of years ago we got a tip from Fodors re a person who would give us an auto tour around Dubrovnik (Capt. Nikola... he was terrific and more cost-effective and certainly convenient than big busses for 3 couples for 5 days before we got our own van and went on our way thru the islands,etc.) ;

Now we have a tip for anyone wanting to see Lisbon, Sintra and many other places in between by car: his name is Mario Goncalves... young, educated, affable guy... has his own car/cab with GPS,etc

He took us (2 couples on a 10-hr tour of Sintra and environs all the way back to Lisbon... and parts of Lisbon for $50 Euros each x 4 people... again, far better than bus trips covering only a portion of what we saw and for shorter times).

Mario then picked the two of us couples up at different times to go to the airport later... reliable, punctual, knowledgeable about what we were seeing,etc.

Knows English, Spanish, French... and of course, Portugese

He has no idea we're doing this: [email protected]

Did you get to see anything in the 10 hours or was it all driving around?

Yes... he let us out and we climbed up to the palace in Sintra; went thru shops; had coffee and their specialty custard in a crust ; thru a couple of other towns whose names I can't remember and could barely pronounce at the time; stopped at a restaurant on the water for lunch; stopped at the western-most point of Europe (on the Atlantic),etc. He'll go where you want to go... and he picked up the gas.

2nd try at further info (don't know what happened to the 1st):
Coincidentally, this past Sunday (Sept 28th) the SFChronicle published an article entitled: "Europe's Version of San Francisco" about Lisbon by Rick Steve's.

Lastly, our parting hotel should be mentioned...Hotel Janelas Verdes (Rua das Jan Janelas Verdes 45; 1200-690 LISBOA). 18th Century restored great home; 29 rooms, outdoor garden-patio, great breakfasts/ staff/ rooftop room and patio.
